The artist lives with, through and in her paintings. Under the protective wing of her husband she has created her works in the quietness of her Studio. In the struggle against the powers, creative work turns into blissful happiness.

In public she presents herseif with her very own kind of art, which is anything but opportune. She looks forward to discussions and the interest shown in her ideas and the way they are carried out to make her special kind of "Painting behind Glass" known to others. For a brief moment she absorbs the admiration, the twinkling eyes and warming closeness of others and in return gives away a wealth of colours a thousandfold.

The artist is moving between the intim creative process and the public interpretation.

But already the moment approaches where longing dri-ves her back to the Studio. Thus the artist returns to the place where she can create her paintings and blissfully thank God for being alive.

"That's me - an artist!"

Vita

Gisela Maria Wittmer was born in Kassel in 1937, daughter to the banker Heinrich Sachse and his wife Emmely. She spent her youth with her parents and two brothers Hans-Joachim and Eckhard in Posen, Kassel and Lauterbach. After Grammar School, training as a translator, stays in France and Spain, her marriage to Ulrich Wittmer and the births of her two daughters Susanne and Alexandra she dedicated herself to the creative art of painting within her family. Years later she discovered "paintings behind glass" with their shining reflection of colours during a two years' stay in Ingolstadt.im Atelier She experimented enthusiastically for two years and developed her own style without following any examples or using the customary outline sketches on the glass. With her power of colourful expression she was thus able to create pieces of art. She tamed the smooth, normally unmanageable glass, creating a fire of glowing colours as if by magic and arranging them in original, mysterious compositions.

Gisela Maria Wittmer had private studies with Professor Max Struppe, Prag, about six years and also received painting tuition from the lecturer Werner Lauterbach and the artist Miriam Aquirre, Santiago de Chile, for another three yars.

Many of her "paintings behind glass" can be found in museums, municipal buildings and private collections at home and worldwide.

Epilogue

by Prof. Dr. Bemd Hamer, Bad Homburg

Gisela Maria Wittmer has made an exellent name for herself with her painting behind glass. 1 have been able to follow her progress since the 80th when her exibithions gained her an ever increasing following abroad and also in our spa town Bad Homburg as well as in our region generally. Over this period of time she has again and again produced a mirror image of the colourful, expressive and emotional development of her unique art of painting. We all would like the painter to continue letting us share in her creative activities through further exhibits in the future. In that respect the number, nature and success of her exhibitions up to date provide us with some clear guidance.
